Questions

Everything people actually ask.

Costs, timelines, integrations, ownership, and where your data sits. If something is not here, ask us — we would rather answer than have you guess.

What does Techmode do?

Techmode is a software and automation agency in Westlands, Nairobi. We build websites, mobile apps, SaaS platforms and AI automations for Kenyan businesses, with M-Pesa and the WhatsApp Business API wired in. Projects start from KSh 80,000, you own everything we build, and the first consultation is free.

About Techmode

Who we are, where we are, and what we will and will not claim.

  • Is it Techmode or Teckmode?

Both refer to the same company. The business trades as Techmode Solutions; the website address is spelled teckmode.com. If you searched for one and found the other, you are in the right place, and either spelling reaches us.

  • Where is Techmode based?

Westlands, Nairobi, Kenya. We work with clients across Nairobi and the rest of the country, and delivery is largely remote — being in Nairobi mainly matters for discovery sessions and training, which are better in person.

  • How long has Techmode been going?

We are a new agency. That is why this site shows working demonstrations you can use rather than a wall of client logos: as a new business the honest form of proof is something you can try, not a testimonial we do not have yet.

  • Do you have case studies or client references?

Not yet, and we will not invent them. What we can show you is the Capability Lab — working versions of the systems we build, which you can use in the browser — plus a written scope and phased payments so you are never exposed to a promise instead of a delivery.

  • What size of business do you work with?

From solo consultants to organisations with several hundred staff. The projects that go well are the ones where somebody can describe a specific bottleneck; the size of the business matters much less than the clarity of the problem.

  • Which industries do you work in?

Retail and e-commerce, professional services, SACCOs and financial services, schools, NGOs, and general SMEs. Those are the six we have written solutions pages for, because they are where the patterns repeat most.

  • Do you work outside Kenya?

Yes, across East Africa, though the tooling we specialise in — M-Pesa, the WhatsApp Business API, Kenyan mobile network conditions — is sharpest for the Kenyan market. We will tell you if a project would be better served by someone local to it.

Pricing and payment

What things cost, what moves the number, and how you pay.

  • How much does a website cost in Kenya?

Our websites start at KSh 120,000, and most marketing sites land between there and roughly KSh 300,000 depending on page count, whether we write the copy, and whether the site sells online. The estimator on our pricing page shows the arithmetic.

  • How much does business automation cost?

Automation projects start at KSh 80,000. A first project usually targets one workflow rather than everything at once, which is what keeps it at that end of the range and what makes the payback visible.

  • How much does an app or SaaS platform cost?

From KSh 450,000 for a focused first release. Live features, integration with older internal systems, and serving several customer types at once are the three things that move it up most.

  • Is the estimate a quotation?

No. The estimator gives a range from the answers you give it, and shows you the arithmetic so you can check it. A quotation is a written document we send after a scoping conversation, and only that binds either of us.

  • How does payment work?

Phased against delivery — typically a deposit, one or more milestones, and a balance at handover. You are never paying for work you have not seen running.

  • Are there ongoing costs after launch?

Third-party costs are yours and we name them up front: hosting, WhatsApp conversation fees, app store accounts, SMS credit. A care plan from KSh 15,000 a month is optional — you own the code and the accounts whether or not you take one.

  • Do you charge for the first conversation?

No. The consultation is free and carries no obligation. If the honest answer is that you should simplify a process rather than build anything, that is what we will tell you, and it costs you nothing to hear it.

How a project runs

What happens each phase, and what we need from you.

  • What happens in the first week?

A working session with the people who do the work, in your office where possible. We walk the process, time the slow steps, and leave with a map. Within a few days of it you get a written scope, a fixed price and a date.

  • How involved do we need to be?

Heavily in week one, then about an hour a week. The first week is where your input changes the outcome; skimping on it is the most reliable way to get the wrong thing built well.

  • What if we want to change something mid-project?

Small changes inside the agreed scope are absorbed. Anything larger is quoted as a change before it happens, so it never arrives as a surprise on the invoice. Nothing is refused outright — it is priced and you decide.

  • What if it does not work?

You see working software at the end of every cycle, so there is no point at which the project could quietly be failing without you knowing. Payment is phased against those deliveries, and the scope you signed is the standard we are held to.

  • Do you work on site or remotely?

Discovery and training are best done in person, and we are in Westlands, so for Nairobi clients that is usually a meeting. The build itself is remote, with a working link at the end of every cycle.

  • What happens after launch?

We stay for the first month of real use, hand over every account and credential, and train the person who will own it. A care plan from KSh 15,000 a month is available and entirely optional.

Technology and integrations

M-Pesa, WhatsApp, what we build on, and who owns it afterwards.

  • Can you integrate M-Pesa?

Yes, through the Safaricom Daraja API — STK push for payment, automatic receipting, and reconciliation against your paybill or till. It is the integration we are asked for most, and it is standard on any store or fee system we build.

  • Can you set up the WhatsApp Business API?

Yes. We handle business verification and API access in your own business name, then build the agent on top. Meta charges per conversation, billed to your account and separate from our fee; we estimate it against your volume before you commit.

  • What technology do you build on?

Mostly Next.js and React for web, React Native for mobile, and cloud-managed databases and infrastructure. We pick boring, well-supported tools on purpose, so that another team could pick the work up if you ever needed them to.

  • Who owns the code you write?

You do — the code, the domain, the hosting accounts and the data, handed over at launch. If you later move to another team, the written handover exists for exactly that. Nothing is locked to us.

  • Will it work on a cheap Android phone over mobile data?

That is the condition we test against, not the exception. Everything is measured on a throttled mobile profile rather than an office connection, because that is the device most of your customers are actually holding.

  • Do you build logins, dashboards and internal systems?

Yes — that is what our SaaS and platform work is. This particular website is a marketing site with no accounts by design, but the systems we build for clients routinely have users, roles and admin views.

Data, privacy and security

Where your data sits, and what we do about the Data Protection Act.

  • Where is our data hosted?

This website runs on Vercel in the EU (Frankfurt) region. For systems we build for you, hosting is a decision we make together during design, including whether local hosting is a requirement worth its cost. We will always tell you where data actually sits rather than implying local residency.

  • Does Techmode comply with the Data Protection Act 2019?

We align our own handling of enquiry data to it — consent as the lawful basis, data minimised, rights honoured within seven days — and we design the systems we build for you around it. Whether the business is registered with the ODPC as a data controller is an open administrative question, stated as such above.

  • Will our data be sent to an AI provider?

Only where the project needs it and you have agreed to it, and only the part of the data the task requires. Where data is sensitive we design around that from the start — redaction before a model sees anything, or a model in an environment you control. It is a decision we make with you.

  • Who has access to our systems during a project?

The people working on it, with the least access that lets them work, and access is removed at handover. We do not keep standing credentials to a client system after a project ends unless you have asked us to for support.

  • What happens if you find a vulnerability after launch?

We tell you, with what it affects and what we recommend. On a care plan the fix is part of the work. Without one, you still get told — withholding it to sell a support contract would be indefensible.

  • Can we run a penetration test against what you build?

Yes, and we would encourage it for anything handling money or personal data at scale. Tell us before you do, so we do not treat it as a live attack, and we will fix what it finds.

Questions about a specific service

Each service page carries its own five questions — pricing, scope and the things that go wrong — answered for that service rather than in general.

Not sure which service fits?

Three questions. One place to start.

Answer as the owner, not as a technical person. We will point you at the service that usually solves your version of the problem — and show you the runner-up, because three questions cannot be certain.

Nothing is submitted and nothing is stored. The result is worked out in your browser.

What is quietly costing you the most right now?

Pick the one that would annoy you most if it were still true next month.

Where does that mostly happen?

The place you would look first if you were trying to catch it happening.

What would be most useful a month from now?

One month, not one year — this decides where we would start.

Answer the three questions above and a recommendation appears here.
